Printing

The IR Lab has quite a few printers in each of the several offices of the group. The department also has a large number of varied printer types that may also be used. The genral Unix method for printing files is to first use "lpr" to print the file or files. Check up on the status of the print job using "lpq". You may specify what printer you want to print to, check on, or remove from a print queue using "-Pprinter_name" (e.g. "lpq -Pciira345"). Pay close attention that your print job prints on the printer you expect. Much paper can be wasted by repeated print jobs going to the wrong location. To ensure that your print jobs go to the correct printer by default, define your PRINTER environment variable in your shell startup definitions file.
Department Printers
Departmental printers reside in CS201 and CS301. The printer names are labelled and departmental etiquette demands that you not only get your own printout, but also other printouts, placing them on the out rack in alphabetical order. Save unwanted cover sheets for the recycling bins.

IR Lab Printers
Group printers are spread among the offices of the lab. Although all printers generally have more than one name, a useful name to use for a printer is the combination of its type and location or its action.
