The Research Experience
for Undergraduates (REU) program at the Center
for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) began in 1999 with a three-year
sponsorship by the National Science Foundation
(NSF). The program provided opportunities for undergraduates to help with research
in information retrieval and organization technologies. Participating students
worked collaboratively with faculty, researchers, graduate students and other
REU undergraduates from around the country during 10-week summer sessions. The
program let undergraduates experience and partake in the research process within
an important and growing field of Computer Science and gave the students and
opportunity to explore options for graduate study.
While the initial REU summer program has ended, the CIIR continues to hire individual local students to work on research projects. For other REU opportunities, visit the NSF's REU web page to view a list of current REU sites.
