This class includes two exams, an in-class midterm and a take-home final exam.

Midterm exam

The midterm is an in-class exam. It is open book and open notes. You may bring electronic devices providing you can convincingly demonstrate that they are unable to access anything other than themselves. That is, you may not access the internet, any telephone networks, any devices belonging to other people, or anything like that. Whatever you bring to the exam must be entirely contained within the room.

The midterm exam will cover all material up to and including the class before the exam. You are responsible for the material covered in class as well as any obvious out-of-class reading you should have done.

Here are some sample midterm exams from past years. Please note that in different years the course material is covered in different orders and at different speeds. That means that past exams may include questions for topics that you are not responsible for. They may also omit topics that you are responsible for. Nonetheless, the past exams give you a sense of the types of questions that will be asked.

In each case, the exam is provided with and without the solutions.  Although you could just look at the solutions as part of studying, a better approach is to look at the problem without the solution, think about it, perhaps write down a sketch of your answer, and only then look at the solution.  It's too easy to convince yourself that you know something if you read the answer.

Final exam

Comprehensive and take home.  Note that the writeup for the project will be due at the same time.
