CIIR researchers introduced language modeling as a formal framework for investigating Information Retrieval in August 1998 with the SIGIR ’98 paper (A Language Modeling Approach to Information Retrieval by J. M. Ponte & W. B. Croft), and it has become a very popular approach. SIGIR 1998 was held in Melbourne Australia from Aug. 24-28, 1998.
